I love my job


Type of the lesson: English practice
Age of students: 18-19 (2nd-year students, level B2)
General topic of the unit: Career
Topic of the class: Job Of My Dream
Goals of the class:
1)    practical (development of speaking skills, understanding and reproduction skills, practice of the vocabulary learned previously);
2)    socio-cultural (to point out the main strategies of communication (communication rules and respect to the speaker), to form the ability to react quickly in different social situations);
3)    professional (to show different approaches to the English teaching and accentuate the necessity to evaluate the results).
Goals of the activity: to practice of the listening and reading skills, to train the ability to express your own thoughts and prove them, to develop the analytical skills and critical thinking.

Task:
Watch the video where Michele speaks about reasons why she loves her job. Using new words and combinations write into the comment section your top-5 characteristics of the Job Of Your Dream. What requirements have to be included? Explain each point. Start with the most important for you. You can choose from the list below or add your own:
1.    Salary (stable, high, low)
2.    Co-workers/ Communication/ Team- work
3.    Office (location, design, guarding)
4.    Prestige
5.    Career growth
6.    Dress-code
7.    Social package
8.    Holidays
9.    Full-time job/ part-time job/ shifts / flexi-time.
10.    Satisfaction

For the next class we will have a scheme where we will be able to see our common top-5 related to the Job Of My Dream so everyone is invited to take part in our small survey.

Alina, I liked very much the idea about lessons that don't require attending classes.I think in future such lessons will be prevailing over ordinary ones.I'm sure students would like that the task is organized in the form of survey. That will definitely catch their attention. You also relate material to students curriculum and model correct oral and written English for students. But, to my mind, one more task is lacking. That would be better if there would be one more activity.
    On the whole, your lesson deserves high point. That's why I give you 5 points.

Tanya thanks for comment and advice but as I understood we were supposed to post just homeasignment (1 task) which should be connected with so-called "previous class" and has to be its logical continuation. As for me the nature of the blog demands a short, dynamic and interactive activity and there is no need to post the whole lesson to be done at home.

  3. I completely agree with Alina and, as for me, the task she has given to the students is well thought-out. The topic in general is interesting and urgent because in several years her students also will face the problem of what job to choose. As for the task itself, I think it's much more interesting to express an opinion in free and easy atmosphere of the discussion than to answer at a lesson waiting for the mark. So, my point to Alina is "5".

  4. The topic of the class is very urgent. The career question is important for every student and the fact that the job has not only to bring money but also to give one some pleasure is hot-button, too. The activity is well-structured, the tasks before and after the activity are easily comprehensible, so students can easily cope with it even without teacher's direct instructions. Plus students like watching videos during the class, it is very entertaining and at the same time it helps to practice their listening skills. I think that Alina has done great job! I put "5"!

  5. As for me, I like such lessons, when there many speaking activities and they are original by themselves, in West countries original ideas are very appreciated. It`s a pity we still live in that "old days", when our people we like zombies which were told what to do and what they should not do(I mean USSR)Oh, I went to some unknown not appropriate direction))) I hope tomorrow we will found out in what way we should do it- in classical academic one or in our owns.
    Second thing that I liked is the video. Well, that women is right, the main point about the job that is supposed to be our favourite one, is the atmosphere. Very urgent topic - about the future job. I put "5"

  6. I think Alina's lesson is really well structured. It's brief and at the same time very informative. A choice of a topic is just to the point. And of course this nice lady on the video =) 5 out of 5 !

  7. Students work with great pleasure on those topics which are urgent for them in this very period of time. That’s why they will do tasks not just because they must, but because of their interest. Tasks which help student to express their personal point of view are always very effective. I like such modern types of classes. So, I put “5”.

  8. Good job, Vitalina! This topic is interesting for students of this age. I think this type of task will help students to make joice about their future. They can not only think about their wishes, but also practice English))5 point.
